Flowers for all occasions: Plants and Flowers

Posted by admin | flowers for all occasions | Friday 5 December 2008 3:20 pm

Plants and flower arrangements that last a while are usually more expensive when you buy them from a florist. It’s not that difficult to create your own great plant displays inside your home. Whether it’s for yourself or someone else, putting it together on your own can add that special touch that might be missed by a professional florist. Nothing against professional florists, but you’re going to know the person you’re making the flower arrangement for a lot more than a professional florist will any day of the week.

Visit a Local Florist for Ideas

While the local florist might not like the idea, you don’t have to tell them you’re not going to buy anything at that moment. If you do tell them you’re interested in do-it-yourself flower arrangements and plants for your home, they may be willing to give you advice and tips on how best to go about it.

Browse Online for Ideas

Another way to get ideas is to use the Internet for research. That isn’t the first use that pops to mind when some people use the Internet, but it’s one that’s made a lot easier by the Internet. As you browse different plants and flowers online, you can save pictures of arrangements that you like to have a starting point for your do-it-yourself flower projects.

Do-it-Yourself Plants

Once you’ve done all the research and know what you want, it’s really easy to purchase the individual parts necessary and put it together yourself for a plant or flower arrangement that will get a lot of compliments and help you display your own unique style to the world. From the pot to the soil to the plant itself, doing the “grunt work” yourself will save you money.

Flowers for all occasions: Wedding Flowers

When putting together wedding flower arrangements, it has to be perfect. You can go to a florist if you like, but be prepared to spend a lot of money to choose a style out of a catalog or possibly get a cookie-cutter approach to your wedding flowers. If you really want to add a special touch to your wedding, and save a lot of money in the process, you should consider a do-it-yourself approach.

Storing the Flowers

Being in a room with flowers for a wedding all around you sounds great, but how do you keep the flowers looking fresh until the wedding? You should make sure you have a cool place out of sunlight to store the flowers. On average, two displays or bouquets will fit in one bucket of water, so plan accordingly so that you don’t end up with wilted flowers on the big day.

Types of Flowers

You can look around online for ideas on arranging the displays and bouquets, but there are only so many ways you can put flowers together. Sometimes it’s more about the types of flowers selected and how they’re mixed together rather than the method used to put them together in an arrangement. Try to choose favorite flowers of the bride and groom so their special day will seem even more special.

Types of Displays

Traditional Flower Displays – The flowers on the tables for the reception can usually be handled by one or more vases of whatever types of flowers you decide to go with. The vase selection can also be an important decision because they will determine how the flowers are presented.

Floating Flower Displays – This is a little unique. Instead of putting the wedding flowers into vases, why not snip them so they have a one inch stem and float four or five of them in a shallow glass bowl of water. Certain types of flowers work better for this, but with a little experimenting, you can easily find the best way for a floating flower wedding centerpiece for the reception tables.

Practice Makes Perfect

As with anything in life, practice will let you get better and better when making wedding flower arrangements. A good place to practice is making just one or two flower arrangements at a time for your own use and not a wedding. Or you could volunteer to do a friend or relative’s wedding. If you go that route, make sure you work with them so they get what they want and not what you envision. It’s their wedding and you want to make them happy.
